Game Based Learning vs. Gamification

Game Based Learning (GBL) is a type of game play with defined learning outcomes, while Gamification is the idea of adding game elements to a nongame situation. Brian Burke defines gamification as "the use of game mechanics and experience design to digitally engage and motivate people to achieve their goals". Everything marketing gurus convince us to do through campaigns, rewards or fidelity cards is a way of "gamifying" our purchasing habits. The ultimate goal of gamification is modifying people's behaviour.

There are various possibilities to integrate games in learning design, but today many are focusing on digital GBL which includes the use of videogames, serious games, coding activities and virtual worlds.
