Teaching with Open Educational Resources

The materials we use when teaching our students are often protected by copyright. But teachers are very creative and often produce engaging materials which could be reused by other teachers. This material could be copyrighted or granted under a difference license.

OERs are "any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license. The nature of these open materials means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share them." (UNESCO).

Education involves sharing knowledge.
When talking about OERs, it is important to understand that authors grant certain rights to their audience, usually through a Creative Commons License. OERs usually involve the so-called 5 Rs, the legal rights to keep that resource for ever, reuse it as it is or modified, combine it with other OERs and redistribute it.

At the beginning it may take a lot of time to find the right resources, the high-quality materials you need, especially when they are good but maybe not perfect for your students. A video, for example, can be too long. You then need to learn how to modify it to suit your students' needs.

If you want to know more about OERs, this POLIMI MOOC is for you:

OER101 Using Open Educational Resources in Teaching

This course offers detailed information on how OERs are currently used in some prestigious universities all around the world. To have a good idea of the quality of OERs available, it could be useful to take a look at the MIT OCW site.

What I found particularly interesting in the course is the following video describing the lifecyle of Open Educational Resources:

There are also practical and useful suggestions as far as accessibility is concerned:

The Risk Management Calculator is a tool designed to help OER creators to assess whether there are risks of infringing any copyrights in producing their resources.
